There are many articles extolling the health benefits of Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) and stating the advantages of using EVOO in our cooking and food preparation. But did you know that there are other uses of EVOO outside the kitchen, including skin care and even to improve your romantic relationships?

Now that we are in COVID-19 circuit breaker mode, and working or studying from home, perhaps we have more time on our hands. Today, we share some tips that you can try with the entire family!

Because EVOO is full of antioxidants and phenolic compounds, it is really good for your hair and skin. You can apply it directly onto your hair, face and body, or you can simply consume it (up to 4 tablespoons a day). Within a few days, you will notice the difference. Your hair will be luscious and shiny- no more frizzy hair because of Singapore’s humidity and no more dry or brittle hair! You will find your skin smoother, glowing and healthier-looking.

Hair

Goodbye frizzy, dry and brittle hair! Hello healthy and glossy locks!

  • Hair mask. Prepare a mixture of extra virgin olive oil and honey in a 3:1 ratio. Apply on clean and dry hair and leave for 30-60 min (or even overnight- use a shower cap) before washing off. If you prefer not to use honey, you can simply apply EVOO on its own.

Nails

As nails are made from the same component as hair- keratin, using EVOO can bring about the same benefits of hydration and strengthening.

  • Cuticle cream. Apply EVOO directly on the cuticles of nails or let nails soak in EVOO bath for 10-15 minutes for deeper nourishment. This helps to strengthen nails and helps them grow faster.

  • Manicures. Apply around edges of nails to prevent smudges and to make it easier to clean off nail polish stains

  • Anti-fungus. Soak affected fingers or toes once or twice a week in EVOO for 10-15 minutes to help get rid of fungus

Skin

Our skin absorbs EVOO very well, especially when it is slightly damp. EVOO does not clog pores and does not weigh down on the skin. A little goes a long way but also using too much never hurts!

  • Makeup remover. Place a few drops on a cotton pad or tissue and use like a regular makeup remover. Note: EVOO will not remove heavy makeup like mascara or thick eyeliner.

  • Moisturiser and massage oil. EVOO promotes cell growth and this keeps our skin youthful and well hydrated. Apply to face and body after a shower, when skin is still damp and supple. You can add a few drops of your favourite essential oil- lavender is my personal favourite- and give yourself (or your partner, or both of you!) a well-deserved massage before bed. Note: EVOO absorbs quickly into the skin so you don’t have to worry about staining the sheets.

  • Before/after shave. Apply to area before shaving to use as a lubricant, and after shaving to relieve razor burns or irritation.

For Babies and Children

Olive oil is gentle enough to be used on babies. Apply 1-2 drops of EVOO onto your baby’s scalp or body if they have dry or sensitive skin. A drop or two of EVOO in your child’s food can also help a picky eater enjoy mealtimes more. It is healthy and they love the taste.

Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is an Ayurvedic detoxification practice, where users swirl oil around in their mouths to achieve benefits such as an increase in energy, healthier hair and skin and whiter teeth. Take 1-2 tablespoons of olive oil into your mouth and then move it around for 5-20 minutes. Do not swallow the oil as it contains toxins that the body has expelled.

Note. There is no scientific evidence that oil pulling has significant health benefits, but there are also no disadvantages to this practice.

Shining Furniture

EVOO can be used to shine and polish wooden furniture. Just add a few drops onto a dry cloth and wipe down any piece of wooden furniture. It gives the furniture a sleek, brand new look.

Have you used EVOO outside the kitchen before? Which of these would you like to try? Let us know your experience in the comments below!
